You might be familiar with this skit. If you had been with us last Christmas, you would have seen our rendition of the production. But with no dialogue during the entire skit, what is it really talking about? We give you a close interpretation to this little classic.

Lifehouse “Everything” Skit

In the skit, God blows life in to a girl. She receives life and is amazed by everything He creates and shows her. But sin seperates them, dragging the girl further and further away from God.

Love/Relationships: It diverts the girl’s attention. Representing the first distraction that draws us away from God.

Greed/Materialism: It taunts the girl, beckoning her but always remaining out of reach. The second veil that blinds us from God.

Drunkenness/Debauchery: It inebriates the girl, causing her to lose her sense of direction. The third glass that blocks out God’s presence.

Vanity/Self-Consciousness: It makes the girl get carried away worrying about how she looks. The forth mask that screens out God’s call for us.

Self-Mutilation/Negativity: It leads the girl to question her life’s value, urging her to harm and eventually kill herself. The final haze that cloaks us from God’s love.

The girl debates whether she should kill herself. All of a sudden, she runs back to God. However, all the things that carried her away-relationships, greed, drunkenness, vanity, and negativity, push her back and beat her down. God throws an invisible rope around her and tugs her to him while the girl fights all the evils to get to God. This shows the desperate battle of that believers face to get back to God. Then God holds all the temptations back and the girl stands, with her black shirt off and revealing the white shirt that was underneath, symbolizing purity. God finally defeated the temptations for her and they walk away, together again.

Verse of the Month

Luke 14:25-27

Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters – yes, even his own life – he cannot be my disciple. And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

Prayers for Bobby

The true story of Mary Griffith, a devout Christian whose conservative intolerance of sin drove her gay son to suicide. Feeling guilty, she begins to question her interpretation of the bible and slowly reaches out to the gay community, eventually coming to terms with her son’s death and becoming one of the most famous gay rights activists. The film was nominated for two Emmy awards and stars Academy Award nominee Sigourney Weaver as Mary Griffith.

My Review

The film certainly opens our eyes not only to the fact that there are gay people among us, but also that they’re human and deserve to be treated as such. It shows just how dangerous it is to blindly believe what we’re taught. Simply trying to scare people into righteousness can have disastrous consequences, as the family has learned to unimaginable cost. Excellent directing and poignant acting by Sigourney Weaver combined to make this a truly inspiring movie. The only drawback, was the overacting of Ryan Kelly, very cliché and overly dramatized.

WeiTing’s Review

As a movie, this show left much to be desired. A couple of monologues could have been better acted out than just voiceovers. The acting was stilted and wooden and I didn’t feel the impact it should have had on me. However, what this story aims to share is this “Love the sinner, Hate the sin”. Faith without question is blind faith. Accepting gays and lesbians is one issue. So is treating them without care. This show reminded me that there are some things we need to stand up and have a say about it instead of just being passive all the time.

Public Review

It’s basically a good movie. It enabled me to understand gay people more and how different people would react. However I wouldn’t recommend it to new-believers or those who do not yet have a strong understanding of the Bible as they may misunderstand our reaction towards a gay Christian.

benchwarmers

The Benchwarmers

The Benchwarmers is about a trio of slightly older friends who decided that baseball should be opened for everyone to play, instead of just the select few of the population. Therein started their baseball team, labelled aptly “The Benchwarmers”.

They played game after game, and won them one after another. That is not to say that they were good. In fact, they were so horrible, you wouldn’t want them on your team at all – even if you’ve got a dream team and they’d be your benchwarmer, just in case they would really stand in.

But their saving grace lay in Gus, a reformed bully who was still guilty and disillusioned with himself ever since he sent a kid into the institution with his taunts and tricks. He was easily the best player on the field, and his team was the hope of many academic inclined kids who were never given the chance to play ball.

Suffice to say, midway through the movie it was obvious that the movie will end on a good note, on a “heal the world, let’s make it a better place” note. It wasn’t ultra saccharine though, I wouldn’t mind watching it again and I did not cringe at any one scene at all.

The characters were not very well-developed, but the story’s pacing more than made up for it – without much noticed. At the end of the day, it simply tells us that everyone should be able to aim sky-high for their dreams, and that scared is an emotion you should continually grow out of. (The brother was so scared of the sun that he stayed in the house the whole day without leaving his room yet nearer to the end of the movie he was a stand-in for the team!)
